It Doesn't Take Much

If you'd told me when I lived in New York that a Panera was being built right around the corner, I wouldn't have thought much of it. With a million restaurant and food choices at my fingertips, quaint little cafés and lunch spots mere minutes away, a Panera wouldn't have really even registered.

But today? When a local shop owner tells me a Panera is being built in our little town, right in front of the grocery store I go to, a short 5-minute drive from our house, I will tell her that she's made my day. And I will mean it.

Everything is relative, that's what I've learned.

I see lots of baguettes in our future, and Sunday night soup-and-sandwich dates, and cozy mornings spent writing and sipping coffee.

It doesn't take much to excite me these days. I suppose one really healthy side effect of living in an area you aren't totally in love with is that you end up taking less for granted. And ultimately, that's a good thing.

So here's to chocolate croissants and acai berry iced tea!

  1. Perspective is everything. I love when I'm reminded of this. I live in an in-between place - not nearly enough cute cafes and eateries within walking distance, but enough within a short drive - and often find myself internally complaining when I see another chain restaurant pop up. But Panera has the best soups and sanwiches and free wifi, which is as good as gold for spending the day writing.

  2. Oh I'm with you on the chains. That's one of the things that drives me nuts about where we live--SO many chains! But Panera is one chain I do really love and so I welcome it with open arms :) I'm sure we'll both get to live in places we really love one day...let's hope!

I feel exactly the same way about things these days. We're also not in a town we totally love, but I cling to those little things that make living here a little bit more enjoyable :) Also, so in awe that you are a classical pianist! That's amazing!

  4. Thank you, Kristyn :)

And I'm exactly the same way, clinging to the "little things" that I can enjoy about where we live. Not always easy, but I find that it becomes a habit after awhile!

  5. We are going to be moving out of state in December, and discovering new local places to be inspired is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most! I would love to be able to wake up early and spend an hour at a coffee shop every morning. Buuuuut I still can't convince my body to be a morning person. Drat.

  6. Oh fun! Yes I'm really grateful that I'm naturally a morning person, because those few hours early in the day are so precious and they're when I'm most productive. But then I'm in bed by 9! Trade-offs :)

  7. Panera is also a treat in Maine! Panera study days are my favorite days. Never thought I'd say that!

  8. Haha Jules! I said something similar to my Mom yesterday when I was telling her the "news"...that I never thought I'd be so excited about a Panera. I'm glad you're with me on this! :)

  10. I work at a Panera, and I am an expert bagel toaster/sandwich maker. Well just for your info a French Baguette costs $2.97 in Chicago. (yes I memorized the price of that and many other things) I hope you will get to indulge and enjoy your future Panera!

  11. Panera was the American restaurant I missed the most in England. SO GOOD AND SO EASY. their chicken noodle soup in a bread bowl? 100% comfort food. the asian chicken salad? healthy and fresh. the roasted turkey and avocado BLT on sourdough? perfect grab and go sandwich!

(can you tell I like Panera? haha!)

  12. Yes! It's just so fresh and reliable! I love your "quick takes" on your favorites--perfect! I love the bacon turkey bravo sandwich, minus the bacon and with avocado. That sauce they put on it...yum!

I agree...being in MD (25 min from DC and Baltimore) and living in the capital of the state I am spoiled to have great restaurants and shopping at my fi g

  14. I do love Panera! Delicious sandwiches, fresh bagels... it has always felt like like one of the "good" chains. I hope that it opens soon so you can enjoy it! :)
