Sunday Currently: Volume 15

Reading books I'm slightly embarrassed to be reading, but we all have guilty pleasures, right? Over the last three days I've devoured one and a half Emily Giffin books, and will probably be done with the second one by the end of today. They are pure "chick-lit," very light reads, but the writing is actually quite good. I saw them at the library and decided I was in the mood for a little bit of fluff.

Writing not much besides this post.

Listening to the washing machine clean our sheets.

Thinking about the yummy Orange Apricot Muffins (from our cookbook) I made for breakfast this morning. I made six, and as you can see from the photo there are two whole ones, and two nibbled ones left. I blame my husband for the nibbles!

Smelling fresh, gorgeous air breezing into through the window. It's a stunningly cool day for this area and this time of year, and I'm in heaven.

Wishing it wasn't so expensive to take out an ad in the church bulletin. I'm looking for more students and assumed that advertising in a church publication would be free--but I was wrong! Even with the 10% discount for artists, it's completely unaffordable. Ah well.

Hoping our little niece has a beautiful birthday! She's 6 today.

Wearing jeans, a black cami, and a mocha-colored long sleeved top.

Drinking a tall glass of water.

Loving dates with my husband. This weekend we went to see Iron Man 3, and we also discovered a delicious, new (to us) Thai restaurant that was as good as any Thai food I've had in New York.

Wanting to finish my book! Oh I'm so hooked.

Needing to snack on some of the tapenade I made yesterday. Yes, needing. This is the second batch I've made this week and I have a feeling it might become a staple in our fridge. It's so easy--I just food-process green olives and kalamata olives, walnuts, garlic, some ground flax, ground pepper, and olive oil. It's divine.

Feeling thankful for girlfriends. I've had some really nice exchanges with friends recently, including a "checking up on you" call on Thursday night from a friend who I'd told recently about some struggles of mine. Her call really touched me.

Clicking on Bloglovin', trying to get used to it. It's not that intuitive so far, I must say, but I'm trying.

Linking up with Lauren today!

  1. Mmm, that tapenade sounds great. I've never thought to make our own, but that sounds reasonably easy to make. I've been slacking lately with cooking, and I really need to get back in the swing of it!

  2. Huge Emily Giffin Fan! Which one are you reading? Pretty much everything she has written, I have loved!
I need to see Iron Man 2 before I see 3. I never was a big Robert Downey Jr. fan until Iron Man came out and he just looked so much better (and hopefully sober :-) )
Both boys are at my parents house in Maryland for the week so hopefully my husband and I will be able to take advantage of some date nights.

Hope you have a great week!

  3. I finished "Heart of the Matter" and am in the middle of "Where We Belong." So addictive :) Iron Man was pretty good, but yes do see the second one first.

Oh I do hope you and your husband get out for some fun dates together this week! Enjoy!

  4. Kate, what do eat the tapenade with? It sounds great but I don't have any experience with it.
Sorry to hear that it's so expensive to put an add in your church bulletin. That is frustrating. I was wondering how you like renting a piano? (Think you mentioned that in your blog). How have you gotten your students thus far?

  5. Hi Sarah! I eat the tapenade on crackers as a snack or even as my lunch! It's delicious on bread too. You could easily serve it as an appetizer, it's fancy enough for that (but so easy too). It's essentially an olive dip.

Good memory on my piano situation! I was renting one, and it sufficed for the few months I had it. But when it looked like we were going to be here longer than expected I moved my piano down here. Much better :)

So far, I've gotten my students through flyers and through Craig's List (believe it or not!). This area really isn't very...cultural shall we say...so I'm frustrated that I haven't found more. I thought word of mouth would be useful but I haven't found that too much. But I'll keep trying :)

  6. happy birthday to your niece! and I love the sound of that tapenade - I'd never think to put flax in, but I bet that cuts the acidity of the olives?

  7. Funny that you mention acidity! The first batch I made was a little too potent and salty, so for the second batch I rinsed off the olives before processing them. I added the flax just for extra healthfulness but I bet you're right! I bet they did help to mellow the flavor a bit :)

  8. I did try to find a local music teacher chapter, even made a few phone calls, but no luck. Trust me when I saw I live in the middle of nowhere :) We're making the best of it, but our goal is to move near a metropolitan area eventually. For now, my best bet has been to find other Army families with children that are interested in taking lessons. In fact, I got an email recently from a mother with a 13 month old!! I explained that this was too young for lessons but I'd be interested in perhaps doing a baby music class with her each week. So we'll see! I'm trying to be patient, and you should too...I think it takes time to establish a studio (oh, and I have dreams of buying a better piano someday too--I have two and they're both good, but I'm greedy when it comes to pianos!).
