Living Room Gallery

At long last, I wanted to share some photos of the gallery wall in our living room. It took a lot of plotting and arranging and re-arranging to get it just right but we really wanted to make sure we loved the design before committing to it. And love it we do! I'm also happy to say that everything on this wall was something we already had, including all of the frames.

Oh, and here's a tip that might be useful to you if you're ever hanging a grouping of artwork. Once we'd decided on a design by laying everything out on the floor, I used painter's tape to approximate where everything would be on the wall. This made hanging everything simple and foolproof. I'd highly recommend this step!

This gallery wall is so special to us because everything in it has meaning. Shortly after my husband moved to New York after college, we bought three sepia-tone photos from a street vendor in Soho and two of them made it into this gallery. (The other one is on our bookshelf.) The other New York photo of the Chamber St. subway station was taken by a professor/friend of mine from college and given to me as a graduation gift. The oval painted tray was something my parents always had hanging in their kitchen, and the wooden deer head is also from my parents. The sailboat photo was taken on Cazenovia lake by my grandfather. Cazenovia is the town in Upstate New York where I grew up and where we held our wedding reception, so that's special to us in more ways than one. There's a photograph of my great grandmother on her wedding day. And the sketch in the red frame is something we pulled out of the latest issue of Notre Dame Magazine. My husband and I met at ND so we thought that a representation of the Dome and the Basilica deserved a place in our home.

Also, I'm kind of obsessed with this happy accident: we have an antique gold mirror leaning against the opposite wall and you can see our artwork reflected in it. Love that!

I will say that I think this arrangement would pop a little more against white walls (which would be my preference--they're just a bit more fresh and modern) but since we're renting we're going to leave the walls as they are. At least for now! I may get the itch and try to get permission from the landlord but the neutral beige is working well enough for the time being.

Hope you enjoyed this peek into our home!

  2. It looks so good! I ended up taking our gallery wall down and replacing it with two diy shelves we made to hold family pictures. It's much better for our space, but I think your gallery wall is much more thought out and just perfect.

  4. I used to think hanging picture frames is really simple, straightforward work. Not so! I was hanging a huge framed painting last week and it was so hard trying to get it lined up both vertically and horizontally. Gah! But it does make me appreciate your lovely your gallery even more :)

  5. Exactly! Agreed. Especially when it comes to art. I think all of our artwork has a story to go with it.

  8. It is hard!! Luckily my dad hung all of the large/heavy pieces of art for us. The painter's tape trick really helped though for the gallery :)
