Lacrimosa is one of my favorites. In terms of orchestral music, I've also always loved Tchaikovsky's Pathetique. I don't think I've ever been able to listen to it without crying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHAfvUFtCIY

I may now have to spend the rest of the afternoon planning that fantasy cathedral trip...Sarah // The Quixotic Chicahttp://thequixoticchica.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-87635189600636711572013-04-13T09:14:49.273-04:002013-04-13T09:14:49.273-04:00Oh such beautiful thoughts and suggestions. I love what he said about it sounding like the angels singing.

I think it's so wonderful that you can appreciate this from a performer's standpoint. I'm listening to the Tallis now. I LOVE medieval and renaissance sacred music. I have a dream to tour Europe someday just listening to music in churches and cathedrals. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is performed each year in St. Stephen's in Vienna and I want to do that once in my life.

Here's a 16th century favorite of mine that you will love:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIcrgNtyX0UKate Harveyhttp://something-ivory.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-32999864403190635992013-04-12T20:27:26.889-04:002013-04-12T20:27:26.889-04:00there are some pieces - sorry, I'm getting car...there are some pieces - sorry, I'm getting carried away now - and you listen to them and you imagine them being performed for the first time in a gothic Cathedral centuries and centuries ago and you can imagine how it was so easy to be struck dumb by the wonder of what God allows us to do. Spem in Alium (http://youtu.be/7Cn7ZW8ts3Y) is one of them for me. I've only sung it once, but it was such a transformative experience.Betsy Transatlanticallyhttp://www.betsytransatlantically.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-20312815699193937072013-04-12T20:22:26.565-04:002013-04-12T20:22:26.565-04:00okay, listen to this http://www.theatlantic.com/te...okay, listen to this http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/08/what-its-like-for-a-deaf-person-to-hear-music-for-the-first-time/260890/ and, while it's playing, read this http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/08/what-its-like-for-a-deaf-person-to-hear-music-for-the-first-time/260890/

you will weep with it in the most miraculous wayBetsy Transatlanticallyhttp://www.betsytransatlantically.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-78145738753983484932013-04-12T18:31:35.245-04:002013-04-12T18:31:35.245-04:00I sure hope you do!I sure hope you do!Kate Harveyhttp://something-ivory.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-9325787391371639752013-04-12T18:31:27.302-04:002013-04-12T18:31:27.302-04:00It's fantastic :)It's fantastic :)Kate Harveyhttp://something-ivory.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8085492922417631594.post-26857823717596953672013-04-12T16:20:10.429-04:002013-04-12T16:20:10.429-04:00This is so lovely. My husband typed it in like this by mistake when he was trying to set up a Google account for me, then fixed it; but Disqus defaults to this spelling. Anyway, it's me, Mrs. Pearl (Laura, not Lauara!)--and I have to tell you that I loved this post. And your brother's photo is so lovely--when I first glanced at it, I thought it was a painting.Lauara Pearlnoreply@blogger.com
